Teaching Before Thanksgiving

November 27, 2019 by thecolorfulteacher Leave a Comment

Raise your hand if that tweet hits a little too close to home. It's right before the holidays, and you teach in one of those school districts that does not have a fall break during the full week of Thanksgiving. I'm sorry. Short weeks, especially ones before breaks, are a struggle. Our kids are frequently acting different than normal (or maybe that's the normal in your class, and again, I ... Shark Day

October 15, 2019 by thecolorfulteacher Leave a Comment

When I theme up a day, it's because I need to amp up the engagement on a topic that isn't the most exciting to teach or learn... and for me, that's nonfiction text features. Teaching my students about a diagram, index, caption, and table of contents? No thanks. That's why I created a way to make it fun! Prior to this day of fun, my students completed a variety of activities from Amy Lemons and ... Read More about Shark Day

An Honest Recap of Get Your Teach On

July 5, 2019 by thecolorfulteacher 4 Comments

The Get Your Teach On (GYTO) Experience is like no other conference I have ever been to. When you hear people talk about it being like a party, that's no joke. The energy, fangirling, light show, music, and stages are at levels comparable to a concert. This recap is of the 2019 GYTO National Conference in Dallas, Texas. Prior to this, I attended the 2018 National Conference in San Diego and the ... Read More about An Honest Recap of Get Your Teach On

Favorite Reads of 2017

January 10, 2018 by thecolorfulteacher Leave a Comment

I'll be the first to admit, my reading habits of 2017 were nothing compared to 2016.  2016 was my year of Kids Deserve It, Crash Course, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Ken Robinson, graphic novels, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi, Ditch That Textbook, Explore Like a Pirate, Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman, Frederik Backman, The Zen Teacher, Play Like a Pirate, Ron Clark, and so much more. It was a balance of reading ... Read More about Favorite Reads of 2017

Chocolate Day

January 28, 2017 by thecolorfulteacher Leave a Comment

As a culminating activity to reading Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, we brought the book to life through Chocolate Day!   As with most special days in 2nd Grade Land, we had to take a selfie because #picsoritdidnthappen My favorite Teach Like a Pirate hook is the costume hook, so of course we had to dress up for the occasion as our best attempts at Mr. Willy Wonka ... Summertime vibes— I spent way too much money onl Summertime vibes— I spent way too much money online shopping (stores in my stories), did a long overdo video chat with @lanyardsandlessons , and now I’ll pass the time reading on my porch. I’m about to wrap up this book. In this house, we’re big data & research nerds, and there’s a lot of “data” being thrown around on news and social media. I appreciate that this book is like a bunch of mini lessons about how to look at data in a productive way, how to not get misled, and how to avoid common data missteps & misunderstandings. It’s chunked into 10 “instincts” and that chunked style of writing makes reading nonfiction a whole lot easier for me. I can read a section, reflect, take a break with another text I’m interested in, and then bounce back to this book a few days later for another tidbit of info. Highly recommend 🌈 •

Today is the last day of distance learning, but kids will probably still be turning in work throughout the week. I’ll be closing out my room tomorrow, and kids will be picking up their supplies and turning in Chromebooks on Thursday. Friday is technically the last day, but there’s just meetings. So I don’t really know which day to wear this shirt 😂 Whenever your actual last day is, enjoy your summer! You’ve earned it 🌈 •

A little #throwbackthursday to check if it obvious what subject I don’t enjoy teaching 🙈 HANDWRITING 😰 When I taught kindergarten I had to teach kids how to print their letters & now that I teach 2nd I have to teach cursive. Kudos to all of you hand lettering teachers out there, but it is just not my forte. Clearly never was. No cute teacher handwriting on the white board in my classroom 😂 🌈 •
